The Open University of Tanzania (OUT) supports distance and online learning. Established by an Act of Parliament in 1992, it is a single-mode institution offering certificate, diploma and degree courses (both undergraduate and postgraduate) through distance learning. Its is headquartered in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. OUT conducts its operations through 25 Regional Centres and 69 Study Centres.

The Open University of Tanzania web site is at http://www.openuniversity.ac.tz/

Mode of Study

(as listed on About OUT web page):

  • Educational delivery is attained through various means of communication such as broadcasting, telecasting, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), correspondence enhanced face to face, seminars, contact programmes.
  • OUT is increasingly using e-Learning as a mode of delivery through the Learning Management system Moodle. It has recently received funding from SPIDER for the establishment of Tanzania's first e-learning center, which will be located at the Headquarters of OUT in Dar es Salaam. The E-learning Centre will focus initially on the building the capacity of the staff and then students from OUT and other universities and colleges. SIDA will also support the capacity-building work of the E-learning Centre.

VLE

OUT's e-learning page explains the choice of Moodle - in that it must answer to the criteria:

  • Student satisfaction
  • Access
  • Learning effectiveness
  • Faculty satisfaction
  • Institutional cost effectiveness.
