From Researching Virtual Initiatives in Education

Jump to: navigation, search

Fathom.com (Fathom) was a for-profit Columbia University-led initiative that operated from 1999-2003. It sought to provide individual learners with e-learning courses containing online lectures, interviews, articles, and other contributions by faculty, researchers and curators from member institutions. Consortium members included diverse and reputable organisations such as the New York Public Library, the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the University of Chicago and others.

Fathom.com was dissolved as a company in April 2003 due primarily to a failure to generate revenue. Fathom courses are now kept online in an archive and are freely available to the public.
